Whether yuo are thinking of starting a small or large interior renovation or designing your dream space, but have never worked with an interior designer before, then here are a few things you should know before you begin. Overhauling a space can be a ton of fun, but does not come withou a price and experience to make it happen. Choosing the right interior designer to bring your design ideas to fruition requires more then simply saying “you’re hired”. In order to have the best design experience possible within your budget, then you may want to ask your interior designer the following questions before you get started.
Can you work within my budget?
While this may seem like an obvious question, it is one that can easily get swept away with the excitment of a design makeover. We understand financial discussions are not always the most exciting but it is one that needs to be as honest as possible with your interior designer. It is important for your interior designer to understand if it is a strict budget or if there is a little wiggle room to give the designer a bit of freedom.
Any experienced interior designer should be willing to work within your budget. We believe even a 2 star budget can be made to look like a 5 star space if allocating the budget properly. While certain pieces are an investment, other change with the seasons and design trends. While it may be benefical to invest in a quality bed, the pillows and throws are where you can save some finances. If you have a healthy budget and are looking for pieces that will last the rest of your life, be sure to make that clear to your interior designer.
How long will it take you to complete my project?
If you are not familiar with interior design or construction, it may be difficult to know how long your project should take. An experienced interior designer should be able to review your project timeline before you begin the design process, based on the scope of your project. Experienced Interior Designers are familiar with lead times for furniture, millwork and materials as well as construction timelines. We outline each project timeline within our fee proposal prior to beginning a project to ensure you are comfortable with the timeline of each phase. We forcast and allow contingencies should there be any unforseen issues when the job is under construction. While we cannot predict natural disasters, we can predict how long your project will take and create a project schedule. As for the finishing touches, hand over your keys to your designer and wait for the grand reveal. By this time you should have great trust in the interior designer you have hired.
How would you describe your design style?
Like everyone else, each interior designer will have a specific design style they are drawn towards, this is not the reason to hire a specific interior designer. An experienced interior designer is able to understand their clients design style and bring their ideas to fruition. Your interior is not the one utilizing the space once your project is completed, therefore it is important it is a clear representation and functional for the end user. Look extensively through your interior designers portfolio, websit and social media and be sure to understand their design process beforehand. While some like to save inspiration images, we create an ideabook specific to each clients project to ensure we understand our clients design ideas.
We’ve had the most positive experiences with our clients and many have become friends long after a project is complete. This is why we love what we do!
